Section 070

Hello everyone!

This blog is part of the Ingl3103-080 section as the substitute for the Informative Essay assignment. I believed students could properly write an Informative assessment without having to resort to the conventional 5 paragraph essay.

Post on, and be as creative as you wish!

Taking Control of your iOS device

Some people could be ignorant about the process of Jailbreaking and might be biased toward people who jailbreak. I want you to know about all things Jailbreak related. To get to know about iOS Jailbreaking you first need to know what iOS is. iOS is a software operating system for mobile Apple devices such as iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Chandan portrays in this next quote the meaning of Jailbreaking "Jailbreaking is the procedure [that] permits root access to the iOS file system and [removes] software restrictions imposed by Apple." App piracy is illegal and people often associate Jailbreaking with piracy for those same reasons but Jailbreaking shouldn’t make the user afraid because users are protected under the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) and it allows the user to perform changes and modifications to products they own.
The iOS Jailbreak can only be performed with a number of vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities are categorized into software vulnerabilities (proprietary of the iOS version) and hardware vulnerabilities (proprietary of the actual device). Groups called Jailbreak teams often take advantage of these vulnerabilities and make Jailbreak tools. The Jailbreak has 3 types and is classified like so: Tethered (requires a Jailbreak Tool to turn on), Semi-tethered (can turn on alone but requires Jailbreak Tool to use tweaks), Untethered (can always run tweaks and is independent from the Jailbreak Tool). These tools allow any user to Jailbreak their device. The Jailbroken iOS device, having root access, has the ability of changing the overall look and functionality of the device.

Cydia is the main program of the jailbreak and is the main contributor to the tweaks that you can perform on your device and has affected iOS as a whole. Allyson affirmed that “Those who jailbroke their first generation iPhones on 1.x have seen several jailbreak ideas and concepts become parts of iOS.” Cydia can be contributed onto with the use of repositories. These accept donations from users and hold packages that install tweaks, most of them paid tweaks. Paid tweaks that you can get for free might be harmful to your device and that is why you should only install packages from trusted sources.

Recovery Mode gives you a way to restore from a jailbreak,
the process is shown in the video below
