Section 070

Hello everyone!

This blog is part of the Ingl3103-080 section as the substitute for the Informative Essay assignment. I believed students could properly write an Informative assessment without having to resort to the conventional 5 paragraph essay.

Post on, and be as creative as you wish!

Ragga Jam Dancehall

The article “Street dances” explained that “Ragga Jam is an expression of the Afro Jamaican Culture Dancehall”. This is a new style created recently in Paris in the 90s and it belongs to the street dance genre. The name of the dance comes from Ragga (as in ragamuffin) and Jam (as in a mix of different influences). This style was inspired by the culture (music and dance) of Ragga- Dancehall from Jamaica. This style of dance is danced to Dancehall music. Isolation is a key for this dance style, also hip, chest and leg movements are very important. This style combines the elements of hip-hop, jazz and other African dances.

The creator of this Dance style is Laure Courtellemont, French dancer, choreographer and pedagogue. She currently lives in Los Angeles and teaches every week at Dance Factory, she has also been teaching at the famous New York Broadway Center. She travels the world to show her amazing talent and experiences she has acquired during her journey, attending exhibitions, festivals and workshops. To date she teaches everywhere from Brazil to New York. Her class performance and choreography have been amongst the most renowned on the Tv show You Can Dance, recognized as one of the sixteen Dancehall instructors Worldwide. She shines through the perfection and mastery of her dance moves. With a combination of originality, sensuality and femininity she makes this type of dance accessible to everyone.

Laure Courtellemont exclaimed, “Dancehall was the mystery of my life, like it was inside of me! Nobody could explain, I was waiting for it.” After the arrival of the Dancehall sound to France, Courtellemont went to what the selectors and radio DJs called Ragamuffin sessions, which happened weekly. She went from hip hop festivals to fitness conventions to introduce the style as to many peoples as she possibly could. Courtellemont informed to the article “Sunday Gleaner” that "she traveled to Brazil, Russia, Portugal, Spain, Italy and many other countries to introduce the style.” She has worked very hard to be where she is today, and has been such an inspiring and influential person to the street dance industry.
