Soccer is currently one of the most popular sports in Europe
and South America. The basic concept of the sport originates all the way back
to the 2nd and 3rd century BC in china. This form of the sport was
known as Tsu Chu which was part of China’s military exercise, at these times
the ball was made out of leather and filled with feathers. There is also
evidence or records that other version also existed in Egyptian and Greek
Society. In the 13th century the sport grew in popularity in England
but since it was during times of war vs Ireland it would distract them from
their archery training. Through the history of football “King Edward III, Henry
IV and Oliver Cromwell enforced a ban on everyone from playing soccer”.
“Football did re-emerge and continued to increase in
popularity mostly among the working class” (History of Football). But the major
development which made soccer more popular happened in the 1815 with
universities, colleges and schools. The sport was still very violent with fight
occurring on the pitch in any given moment without any regulations against it.
Modern day soccer was established in 1863, although the way we know it now was
actually established in December of that same year since it was separated from
rugby. Soccer became its own association and with this soccer banned any type
of handling apart from the keeper.
The FIFA association was created in
1904 and by the early 1930s there different leagues operating in different
countries for example Argentina, Australia, Germany and Brazil. “FIFA is
credited for creating the first world cup in Uruguay” (history of Soccer). But
the truly defining moment for soccer was the 2010 World Cup which was held in
South Africa. In this World Cup Spain was the Victor. These competitions are
fierce in this sport that has evolved so much. This is a truly amazing sport
which has come so far and will continue to evolve.
